Lexus GS430: Ahead of the pack

Lexus is one of the world’s youngest luxury automotive brands but it already ranks among the highest achievers in the industry when it comes to garnering awards for excellence. Lexus has regularly put the hammer down when it comes to quality and pride of ownership in numerous consumer surveys from all around the globe. Lexus has augmented its superb record of engineering, with its GS430/300 intelligent sports sedans.

There are two versions - the sV6 engined GS300 and the V8 engines GS430. The latter’s 300 HP is carried over from the previous line-up, whereas the former now boasts a smooth 245HP. While the different powerplants cater for different audiences, what one sees is what one gets and on the outside the GS now comes wrapped in a body whose elegant lines are much more attractive than its predecessor’s.

This third generation GS is a car that breaks new boundaries for Lexus. There is a reflection to a new, more passionate direction in styling and it has the distinction of being the first production model to display the powerful and sleek styling of L-finesse, the design principles that will shape a whole new generation of Lexus vehicles. Developed in a three-year project, L-finesse shows Lexus adopting a bolder approach to design than ever before (and it shows!).

From an architectural standpoint, the GS marks a move towards a more sculptural direction that is artistic, dynamic, simple, yet intriguing. A long wheelbase and wide rear track help create a wide, powerful stance. A long hood, pulled-back cabin and short rear deck recall classic sports car proportions while the vertical grille surrounded by four independent headlamps connects the GS with the outgoing model, but with a futuristic look. The front also features an aggressive lower valance with integrated fog lamps. Dynamic 18-inch aluminium wheels with wide, low-profile tyres on the GS430 help tie the muscular yet elegant look together (17-inch aluminium wheels are standard on GS300). The creation of a unique spatial feeling in the passenger compartment is central to the new Lexus design direction.

A Lexus should have a special interior and the inside of the new GS fits the bill. There is a precision, luxury feel with ultra-premium wood, polished metal and leather accents. Everything inside the GS is designed and styled to create a haven for comfort with touch points that convey quality and controls that respond with confidence. The GS incorporates a lot of intuitive features. It begins with the Smart Access keyless entry and new push-to-start ignition system that allows the driver to keep the access fob in their pocket or purse. A comprehensive interior lighting system provides just the right amount of light where driver and passengers need it. A new gauge cluster was developed that features machined aluminium facings.

The GS430 comes with a Mark Levinson designed DVD, MP3, hi-fi, unique to Lexus. The Lexus DVD-based satellite navigation system is offered with a simple touch-screen operating system that also lets you operate the audio and air conditioning functions and, where compatible, Bluetooth control of your mobile telephone. For even greater ease of use, voice control functions are also available, capable of recognising a multitude of commands.

The GS430 also comes with the Lexus Parking Assist system, which uses a rear-view camera linked to the central display screen to provide ideal guidance for reverse manoeuvres. There is also less risk of unwelcome scrapes thanks to front and rear parking sensors that operate in line with the car’s steering angle

While the features are aplenty, some of them do prove to be awkward to use. For instance, a hidden retractable pod on the lower left side of the steering wheel reveals buttons and switches that are not frequently needed when driving in order to simplify the driver’s view These include controls for the power mirrors, dash-light adjustment and petrol-flap opener, among others. Likewise, the seat-heater and some transmission controls hide beneath a sliding centre armrest. Multi-adjustable front seats feature standard heating and optional fan ventilation, while an electronic tilt/telescoping steering wheel helps ensure a comfortable fit.

This car has tons of technology hidden under its svelte bodywork. The acronyms tell you so in case you miss the point. There is VDIM to co-ordinate, ABS, BA, EBD, VSC, TRC and EPS with VGRS. Translation: Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management oversees electronic-control brakes, anti-lock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, vehicle stability control and electronic power steering and variable gear ratio steering. And there is hill-start assist and intelligent AFS (adaptive front lighting system). Phew! And by the way, all this works without the driver even noticing the hi-tech at work.

While the BGRS is not very sharp at low speeds, it applies steering automatically when needed, like in situations to correct a skid or keeping the Lexus straight when braking or accelerating on slippery surfaces.

The VDIM is the backbone of all the electronics and integrates all the various systems to optimise the vehicle’s performance in cornering, acceleration and braking. While conventional systems only start to control these operations near the limit of the vehicle’s capabilities, VDIM activates before the limit is reached, contributing to smooth vehicle response and optimum vehicle stability even on inconsistent road surfaces.

The output from the V8 isn’t vast but it’s easily exploited, with a fine spread of torque and a six-speed automatic box to make good use of it. The 300 horses do their job with a zest and exuberance that is quite refreshing, thanks to the wide spread of torque available. Power is transferred to the road via the rear wheels, with the 6-speed automatic transmission with its wide range of ratios doing a great job of channelling the energy produced up front. The automatic has a multi-mode feature, wherein manual shifts can be actuated to provide a sportier driving feel.

Lexus vehicles are brought to you in Oman by Saud Bahwan Group – along with special benefits and privileges such as a 6 years unlimited extended mileage protection – AMAN BAHWAN and Lexus Prestige Club Card that offers 24 hours on-road assistance from AAA, shopping discounts from premium outlets and more.
