Lexus RX350 - Unrivalled in its class
The Lexus RX350 has been a consistent top seller, and occasional leader.
It is fitted with a 3.5-litre, Dual VVT-i, V6 engine that is not only
the leader in its class in terms of power and acceleration, but also
outperforms its six-cylinder petrol-powered rivals in fuel consumption
and emissions. It develops 298 HP (270 Net), giving nought to 0-100km/h
acceleration in 7.4 seconds. Already a quick machine, the new engine
nails its other V6-powered rivals in acceleration.
A serene, silent cruiser, the V6 is as smooth as they get and delivers
the refinement for which Lexus is renowned.The five-speed complements
the engine in the smoothness of its shift action. Left in Drive, it
requires a decent prod on the pedal to kick down a couple of gears
but it segues nicely between fourth and fifth. Sport locks out fifth
but seems to do little else. Manual shifts are crisp and quick; the
engine runs to the rev limiter.
The suspension is compliant and disciplined, with good control on
corrugations but just a touch of front-end bounce on undulating surfaces.
The RX350 is quick and tidy on a dirt road.
The brakes have plenty of power and good fade-resistance.Ride comfort,
and the suppression of road noise, are excellent. The RX350 is quiet
and comfortable on any surface.
Inside, the interior is basically unchanged. Superb fit and finish
quality; the most comfortable seats in the class and high equipment
levels remain Lexus strengths.Automatic air-conditioning, a sunroof,
leather, power everything, in-dash six-stack CD/cassette player (WMA/MP3
compatible), swiveling low-beam projector headlights. Roof rails on
the RX350 have horizontal, movable cross racks.
Introduced on the RX350, the rear-view camera provides assiatance
while you park the car. Use it once and you’ll be sold. The
luxury adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a beaut Mark Levinson sound system
with a six-stack CD/DVD changer, touch-screen DVD-based satellite
navigation, air-conditioning, audio, trip computer display, Bluetooth
installation with steering wheel mounted controls and voice recognition.
Dash layout is clean and stylish, though the mix of touch screen and
conventional knobs and buttons for audio and air-conditioning is confusing
and inefficient.
The rear seat is split 40/20/40, with the centre section able to be
folded down when carrying long objects. It also has a 60/40 split
which allows you to adjust each side.
Legroom is sufficient for tall adults when the seat is pushed back.
Three child restraint anchors are on the rear of the seat.As a fully
loaded, comfortable, refined luxury wagon that’s also an engaging,
enjoyable drive, the RX350 shines.
