SC430: Elite Luxury.
Its yacht-like curves, striking headlamps, integrated spoiler at the
back all combine to give the Lexus SC430 an athletic look - all muscle
and no flab. This Coupe is a stunning car and pressing a button results
in an equally stunning convertible. It represents a major shift from
the quiet styling cues associated with Lexus sedans.
Lexus SC430 is a classy luxury car for people who desire exclusive
luxury. In spite of its luxurious overtones, the SC430 delivers surprisingly
good performance. With rear-wheel drive and a 4.3-litre V8 that puts
out 332 horsepower, it can out do most sports cars on the roads today.
It’s stable at high speeds and, though soft, its suspension
is well controlled on winding roads.
The squat stance is definitely peppered with styling cues to suit
European and American tastes, with its elongated wheelbase and sensuous
skin stretched tightly around the flared wheel arches. With the top
raised, the coupe acquires a dynamic silhouette with shades of classic
retro, while on open top motoring, the car gains a fast and fluid
profile.
Inside are plenty of space and loads of creature comforts. The cabin
is luxurious and it abounds with wood and leather trimmings. Trim
quality is among the finest and even surpasses the levels for a car
of this type and class. An impressive Mark Levinson music system provides
rich acoustics.
As with most coupe convertible with sporty leanings, the SC430 is
a 2+2 rather than a proper four-seater. Power is distributed to the
rear wheels via a 5-speed super electronically controlled automatic
transmission with the 4.3-litre engine with VVT-I generating 332 bhp
at 5600rpm.
Here's another plus-point for those who prefer to drive with the top
down. Fabricated from lightweight aluminium in two panels, it's activated
with a toggle switch on the dashboard and takes about 25 seconds to
lift and retract.
Safety equipment for SC 430 includes dual frontal airbags, side-impact
airbags, driver& passenger knee airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic
brake-force distribution, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control,
and traction control. The SC features an Adaptive Front Lighting System
(AFS), which helps drivers see around turns better at night. The system
uses an on-board processor that calculates the optimum angle to illuminate
a turn, then swivels the headlamp closest to the turn accordingly.
The vehicle features a lavish cockpit with contoured bucket seats
swathed in buttery-soft leather trim. The seats are very comfortable
and adjust in every imaginable direction. Rich, glossy wood, in
burled walnut graces the steering wheel, gear selector, and console
and streaks across doors and dash. Wooden flaps conceal the audio
unit and a DVD navigation system. A leather-padded armrest tops
the console; lifting it reveals a handy storage bin. The cup holders
work great.
The SC 430's cockpit is commendably simple and well organized,
in spite of its sophisticated electronic gear and power-motivated
controls. The driver faces a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes
and incorporates handy switches for the cruise control. The gauges
are easy to read except fuel and temperature, which compete with
the gear indicators for attention.
The DVD navigation system guides you to destinations across Oman
and the GCC. The automatic climate system features independent controls
for the left and right sides of the cabin. It has its own, separate
LED display for temperature and airflow. It's easy to read and operate
yet is quite sophisticated: Lap vents deploy automatically when
the top is open to compensate for solar heating.
The 240-watt Mark Levinson stereo delivers amazingly good quality
sound. The radio, cassette player, and six-disc, in-dash CD changer
brilliantly reproduce music and voice through a seven-channel amplifier
and nine speakers, including an eight-inch subwoofer. It maintains
full harmonic richness and high audio resolution even when you're
at speed with the top down.
